Spring has Sprung!

In LA and most of the country we are living through "spring". I'm using quotes because it's 80 degrees one day and a snow storm the next. At least that's what I hear from my peeps in NYC. Here in la la land it's 70 and then 50 with rain storms. Which is pretty crazy for us, we do know how to party!

I'd like to share some super herbs for spring. This is the time to detox. The world is springing forth great herbs and greens that detox us, it's natures way to say 'hey, you've had the winter to hibernate, let's get the body dusted off detox some of that excess and get ready to show off this summer!' -quote from momma earth :)

These herbs are high in anti oxidants which we need during spring. When allergens are flooding the air and those spring colds full of phlegm start to act up we need to reinforce the immune system and these three beauties do just that.

Parsley

Those fresh green salads you think you should eat? Go for it and add a handful of fresh herbs like parsley. It's not a garnish, it's there for a reason. That reason is that parsley essentially scrubs your insides.

"The leaves of Parsley are rich in chlorophyll and acts as a powerful neutralizer of bad breath. Chlorophyll is an anti-mutagen that acts as a very good deodorizer. Parsley has been used in various forms to combat bad breath, but the effects are at its best when it is fresh. Parsley is the best antidote for bad breath especially for reducing garlic-odor when some food containing garlic has been consumed. When dining outside in a restaurant, if a person feels that he/ she is having bad breath the easiest way out is to order a dish that contains Parsley. Chewing on the leaves will give instant relief and avoid embarrassment."

Parsley Tea if you need more reasons!

Chives
These have bloomed.
In the store you won't see the flowers.

Potent in antibacterial, anti-yeast and antifungal compounds, chives has many similar properties to its relatives garlic and onion. Chives also help boost glutathione levels in the body. Glutathione is a powerful detoxifier and anti-cancer compound.

Easy ways to add chives? Toss them on top of that salad with your parsley, add them to your eggs in the morning. Spruce up that sandwich for lunch and make dinner pop with chives sprinkled generously on top! They can be used with anything food that a mild onion or garlic flavor compliments. There are garlic chives which have more of that garlicy flavor, I grow them on my fire escape!

Poached eggs in sauteed dandelions
Dandelion

Dandelion is held in high regard as a detoxifier. According to Jacqueline Krohn in Natural Detoxification(Hartley & Marks Publishers, Inc., 1996, Dandelion stimulates the elimination of toxins from every cell in the body. It is often used in comprehensive treatments for the liver. Dandelion also increases bile production and stimulates its flow to the gallbladder. The polysaccharide insulin found in dandelion is said to have white blood cell and immune-boosting properties.

The picture above is from this recipe. I wouldn't separate my eggs I practice a whole foods diet and no amount of egg whites vs yolks fighting will change that. But it's a very simple recipe just saute the dandelions in garlic and butter ( or olive oil ) make little wells in the greens for the eggs cover and cook for a few minutes check the yolks, if you like em runny they will be ready quicker. Add some chives, parsley, and good Parmesan cheese and you've got yourself the best detox breakfast ever!
